#50: Avarice (Deadly Sin Series 6 of 7)

June 28, 2016

Today’s episode on avarice is the sixth in a seven part series on the seven deadly sins.  We also go on a tangent in the beginning about baseball card trading.  Sorry to those not interested in that!

Saint Quotes of the Week

“Against the sin of avarice the Creator, the creature, and Nature alike warn us. (1) The Creator by prohibiting it—St. Luke 12:15, ‘Take heed and beware of covetousness.’ (2) The creature, in giving itself and its possessions. St. Augustine says, ‘It is a great sign of Divine goodness that every creature thinks to give somewhat of its own nature.’ (3) Nature, by restraining it—Tobit 4:16, ‘See thou never do to another what thou would hate to have done thee by another.'” – St. Thomas Aquinas (Homily on Pride and Covetousness: Third Sunday after the Epiphany)
“As the drawing near of the soul unto God with the affection of the will is the source of all good, so the going away from Him, through love of created things, issues in all evils and calamities, in proportion to the joy and affection which unite us to the creature.” – St. John of the Cross (Ascent of Mount Carmel)
“No event has so corroborated my belief in the next life as Charles Williams did simply by dying. For when the idea of death and the idea of Williams thus met in my mind, it was the idea of death that was changed.” – C. S. Lewis wrote this epitaph on the death of his friend Charles Williams

Challenge of the Week

Give away something that you own that is a true sacrifice (not just excess stuff that you want to get rid of anyway).  Do this as a way to purify yourself from earthly attachments.

Dinner Table Questions

1. What is one thing that would be very difficult for you to give up?
2. How can you detach yourself from your material possessions?
3. When was a time when you felt greed for money, possessions or accomplishing tasks?
