Ok, so in this episode, we’re taking a look at the poem “The White Man’s Burden” written in 1899 by Rudyard Kipling when the tide of American Imperialism was growing strong. It presents an idea that it is the “white man’s” responsibility to elevate the lifestyle and circumstance of the people native to the land’s they were conquering. Many would claim it was just a way to justify a horrible act, and some would say that the people advocating imperialism were doing so because they genuinely thought they were improving the lives of others and therefore contributing to the greater good. As we look at this poem, we’ll take the time to look at some of the meaning behind what’s being said, the environment of the time and the rightness or wrongness of their approach to “bettering humanity”.
