Demystifying the Distortions of Lipedema

June 11, 2017

Catherine Seo, PhD had 40 years of struggling with weight issues, she successfully shed and maintained a weight loss of 140 lbs from 1987 – 2007. This was based on regular attendance at self-help groups and a structured very low carbohydrate food plan of weighing and measuring 3 meals a day with no sugar, flour, grains or high starch veggies and nothing in between meals except water, diet soda or tea. She carried a scale with her, and weighed and measured all meals no matter the situation. Catherine was still considered overweight by most charts, with fat persistently holding onto my thighs, upper arms, and hip region, but she was content in her size 14s and occasional 12s. At first, this consistent feedback and lack of support especially from these well-respected and trusted healthcare professionals disempowered her. She had held her former surgeon, Dr. Winograd, and his staff at Mass General Hospital in such high esteem...

What is lipedema?
Lipedema is a disorder of adipose tissue distinguished by five characteristics:

1) it can be inherited;

2) it occurs almost exclusively in women;

3) it can occur in women of all sizes, from the seriously underweight to the morbidly obese;

4) it involves the excess deposit and expansion of fat cells in an unusual and particular pattern – bilateral, symmetrical and usually from the waist to a distinct line just above the ankles; and

5) unlike the “normal” fat of obesity, lipedemic fat cannot be lost through diet and exercise.
