Ghostbusters (2016) Trailer Reaction and Review

March 04, 2016

I’ve been waiting for this trailer for a long time. There was alot of shit surrounding the choice in the casting being all women. There also was the thing of rebooting Ghostbusters rather than another sequel. I reserved judgement till today when finally, the 1st real trailer came along. Wasn’t sure what to expect so I went in no expectations and…even that didn’t save the trailer from all out sucking. There was alot of legit criticism over things like the horrible cgi, writing, etc. Then the SJW brigade flew out of the wood work going on all social media defending the trailer from the dudebros and neck beards of the net as well as any other dissenting opinions. We’ll get to this shit later because it shows up in some big media outlets, but 1st the actual trailer content. The trailer starts off almost like we are getting a handing of the torch of sort, but no, SWERVE! We start in what is a damn near shot for shot remake of the original library scene. Also there is no time wasted with shitty cgi being shown. CGI up there with the shit likes of Haunted House and 47 Ronin. The visuals seemed rather video game-esq and stiff in places they shouldn’t be. Slimer at least looked like slimer, but in the same shit CGI. One of the worst effects is that damn stilt man ghost. And of course it wouldn’t be Sony without that fake ass Times Square they are so fond of. There isn’t anything here that draws any level or terror or suspense from the ghosts. The writing from what I’m seeing is really flat and lacks the adult humor found in the previous films. The trailer has very slap sticky gags and alot of reference humor that keeps pointing back to the prior works in the franchise. The thing with reference humor is you can only use it so much before it makes your audience think “Yeah I should be watching the originals instead of this”.  One of the most blatant of the ref humor gags is the exorcist gag towards the end of the trailer. The story is pretty much the same as the 1st with having to stop a big demon from destroying the world. The way the universe is presented, I just don’t feel a sense of urgency or that the stakes really matter. Briefly touching on the music, the new rendition of the theme feels out of place. The piano theme seems like it would fit in something less light hearted than this trailer. It ties in one of the biggest issues what is being presented. Everything is far too colorful and bright and cheery for a movie dealing with the paranormal. Even the new uniforms feels like a bad cosplay. The Director, Paul Feig has made alot of cult hits like Freaks and Geeks and Mad Men so we know he is capable. Things just don’t gel together well in this trailer...
