Liturgy and diversity.

Continued from last week, we talk about the how, when, and where of liturgy.

How:

Singing and Music - A treasure of inestimable value

Combination of sacred music and words
"Singing is praying twice" - St. Augustine
Texts must always be in conformity with Catholic doctrine and they should be drawn chiefly from the Sacred Scripture and from liturgical sources.

Sacred Images - represent Christ

Even images of the saints signify Christ, who is glorified in them.

When:

Once each week on Sundays - The Lord's Day: The day of the Christian family, and the day of joy and rest from work.
Also over the course of an annual schedule full of seasons

Easter is the Feast of feasts or the Solemnity of solemities. The combination of Mentos and Diet Coke.

Constantly through the Liturgy of the Hours, AKA: Divine Office

Laity, too, are encouraged to recite the divine office (see links below)

Where:

Not in any one place but wherever the people gather.
The Church building is important, however. They contain the following:

Alter - The Cross is the alter of the new covenant. It is the center of the church.
Tabernacle - Should be in a most worthy place with the greatest honor.
Sacred Chrism - Oil used for anointings. reserved and venerated in a secure place in the sanctuary.
Chair (Cathedra) of the bishop or priest should express his office
Lectern (Ambo) - suitable place for announcing His message.
Baptistry or holy water font - should remind us of our baptism
There should be a place for confessions
And the church should be a space for recollection and silent prayer.

In addition to all this, we begin a new section that talks about the diversity within liturgy. It is great and important but must promote unity.
