Episode #82 – Dark Shadows

May 14, 2012

// NEWS
* VAMPIRES: New Orleans
- A Great documentary web series about real vampires living in New Orleans, just wrapped up their first season. (10 short episodes.)
- Episode 3 is of special note, as it shows how Belfazaar feeds. All of the episodes have been well done.

* I AM LEGEND by Richard Matheson was named Vampire Novel of the Century
- "The one-off prize was dreamed up by the Horror Writers Association in conjunction with the Stoker family estate to mark the centenary of Dracula creator Bram Stoker's death".
- The other nominees were: The Soft Whisper of the Dead by Charles L. Grant, Salem's Lot by Stephen King, Anno Dracula by Kim Newman, Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice, and Hotel Transylvania by Chelsea Quinn Yarbro.

* Tom Cruise to star in a new "Van Helsing" movie
- For a new Universal movie but as Abraham Van Helsing, so this is not a reboot of Hugh Jackman's Gabriel Van Helsing.

// FOOD
* Monsterland Bar & Grill, in Mesa, AZ
- Cool place, decent prices considering the atmosphere (atmos-fear?).

// SHOUT OUTS
* Brad Adair, thank you for the kind words!

// PROMOS
* Underwood and Flinch and other podcasts by Mike Bennett
* Horror Addicts podcast, hosted by Emerian Rich, author of NIGHT'S KNIGHTS and DUSK'S WARRIORS.

// BUMPER
* GAIL CARRIGER

// TV
* Lost Girl
- I realized that one of the main reasons that I love LOST GIRL on SyFy so much is that the relationship of Bo and Kenzie is just like Lilith and Anna. The show itself, with all of the different mystical characters, reminds me very much of the environment of LILITH'S LOVE. In fact, one could argue that Trick is Malcolm and Dyson is Michael. The big difference, of course, is that all of the mystical creatures on LOST GIRL are ALL Fae. Even the werewolves, succubi and vampires!

* The Vampire Diaries
- Season finale "The Departed" SPOILER ALERT!

// MOVIES
* Dark Shadows
- Good news: It didn't suck. It's a Tim Burton vampire movie, to be sure. If you go in expecting it to be over-the-top (especially if you are a fan of Tim Burton's movies) I think you will enjoy it. It is as much an homage to the vampire genre (with a cameo by Christopher Lee) as it is to the original Dark Shadows TV show. It's not perfect, but it is NOT the non-stop parody the trailers would have us believe. It does poke a lot of fun at the 70's, like a Gothic Austin Powers movie, but since the point is to illustrate the absurdity of Barnabas being in the ground for 200 196 years, it wasn't that obnoxious. The 70's music was too much, though. There were much better choices. At least Alice Cooper saved us there.
- Dan gives it an 8/10. Michelle gives it a 6.75/10. We realized eventually why we liked but didn't LOVE this movie. To borrow a phrase from the movie itself, "she likes to pretend she's Rock & Roll but she's a Carpenters kind of chick for sure."

// FAREWELL
* We wrapped the show by playing "Twilight" by 11 Steps, with thanks to Jamendo.
* Our intro music is "Alchemists Tower" by Kevin MacLeod's Incompetech.com.

That wraps up this episode of the Out Of The Coffin podcast. Thanks for listening!
