2014 – In a $19 billion acquisition, Facebook acquired WhatsApp – an instant messaging app for smartphones. This cross-platform app allowed messages from Android, iOS, BlackBerry, Symbian, Windows phone and more. WhatsApp was founded in 2009 by Brian Acton and Jan Koum.
