February 16, 1968: The First 911 Call Made – Haleyville, Alabama

1968 – Haleyville, Alabama. The first 911 call in the US is officially used – 35 days after AT&T implements the emergency call number. Alabama Speaker of the House Rankin Fite placed the call at 2 PM to Congressman Tom Bevill to officially inaugurate the system. 911 was created because it was not in use within US phone systems. Alabama got wind that AT&T was planning to create the first 911 dispatch center in Huntington, Indiana, so he decided to independently build their system.
