Go Extreme with Champion 3D Aerobatic Pilot Joe Smith

October 02, 2013

Pushing your aircraft to the edge of the envelope requires mechanical precision. Beyond The Flightline host Todd Carrison learns from the best in both worlds on flying and maintaining these extreme machines. Todd speaks with aircraft mechanic Kenny McKibben who has worked on F-16s in the USAF, was involved in building the Boeing 737, and worked in the elite Cessna experimental aircraft department as Cessna pushed the envelope with new ideas. Then Todd talks to 3 time King 50 Extreme Aerobatic 3D Champion Joe Smith about the roll his entire family plays in keeping RC flying fun as well as competitive. Todd also discovers what Joe means when flying low to the ground or water and the risks involved when putting on an extreme flight show.

The Parallels: Full Scale vs. Radio Controlled Aircraft

While growing up in the aviation capital of the world, Wichita, Kansas, Kenny McKibbens fascination with aircraft started at age 10 building a plastic model of his favorite plane the North American F86 Saber. His aviation career really took off at age 18 when he became a crew chief in the United States Air Force on a General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon. Kenny then shares his experience at Boeing as well as his favorite career move to Cessnas experiment aircraft department. As a full scale/real aircraft mechanic, Kenny explains the commonalities radio controlled model aircraft have with full scale aircraft and the importance of maintaining both type of aircraft.

Buddy Box

Steve Swagerty discusses how to save money by matching your radio controlled model with equipment you may have picked up at a swap meet or something you already own but dont have the data or manuals to support your equipment. Have no fear; Mr. Buddy Box is here. A few simple tests and your problems are solved.

Grace at Home

Senior Pastor Tim Howey and Grace@Home Director Kathy Schlotzhauer share the passion and commitment to family Grace Church has in building strong families throughout the community. They explain one of the highest privileges parents have in modeling to their kids and what that might look like. Tim and Kathy also talk about physical age verse spiritual stage and how understanding these two areas can equip parents to better understand and train their children for future life encounters.

Go Extreme with Champion Pilot Joe Smith

Extreme Aerobatic 3D Pilot Joe Smith started flying radio controlled planes when he was 14 years old with the help of his family. Joe is now the only person to win the aerobatic contest King 50 three years in a row. He explains the steps he's taking to improve his skills while staying at the top of his game. Joe also made flying history when he created a plane reflection flying his aerobatic routine over water at night; he reflects back and tells what motivated him to make this bold move. Joe is also featured in one of RCFlightlines videos at a flying event in Arkansas; see if you can guess which plane hes flying.

Flight Forces

Airplanes have limits during take-off and climb called Vx and Vy, but if you dont understand these limits it could mean disaster for you and your plane. Flight Forces expert Steve Lewis quickly clears up the common mistakes pilots make during take-off.
