20090918 - SEGMENT 2: 11 pm - 12 am Eastern / 8 pm - 9 pm Pacific - TISH KINNEY - Can Emotional Trauma Make You Sick? - According to a study by Jane Leserman, PhD, From the Department of Psychiatry, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Chapel Hill, North Carolina, 1,225 female HMO patients revealed some surprising data about the toll of sexual abuse. It was discovered that childhood sexual abuse was associated with worse functional disability, more physical symptoms, more physician-coded medical diagnoses, nearly twice the emergency room visits, and $245 greater median annual health care costs. Data from a large random sample of several communities (Epidemiological Catchment Area Study) have also shown worse physical functioning, more physical symptoms, and poorer subject health status among those reporting a sexual abuse history. A nationwide probability sample showed that men and women who were sexually abused in childhood had a greater likelihood of reporting a serious medical condition in the past year. Trish Kinney, author of the bluntly autobiographical Silver Platter Girl, from Seven Locks Press, knows from personal experience the two are related. Her story will be relevant to a vast number of silent sufferers and their families who could benefit from her journey. - www.silverplattergirl.com |
