We Just Watched a Movie - Unforgiven

June 02, 2014

Unforgiven this week.  Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956) next week.  We also have a special guest on the ‘cast, Michael’s father (and Jonathan’s father-in-law), Michael Sr.  As always, follow along on our iCheckMovies list, and be sure to let us know how you’d rank the movies in the comments below.

Unforgiven – August 7, 1992

Director: Clint Eastwood

Producer: Clint Eastwood

Writers: David Webb Peoples

Actors: Clint Eastwood, Gene Hackman, Morgan Freeman, Richard Harris

Studio: Malpaso Productions

Distributor: Warner Bros.

The course of the conversation:

Jonathan is unforgiven for his pun.

Michael Sr. likes the more realistic take on the Western.

The modern Western vs. the Spaghetti Western.

Thoughtful violence.

The evolution of the Kid and the acceptance of the Killer.

Little Bill’s self-delusion and the nature of villainy.

They’re all wearing grey hats.

The benefits and evils of whiskey.

Jonathan-of-the-Future’s Commentary: I was trying to say that whiskey is symbolic of Will letting go of his self-control.  It’s an excuse, a trigger, but it’s not the root cause.  For Will, it was whiskey.  For Little Bill, it was the badge.  For The Kid, it’s his pride.  Ned couldn’t let go, regardless of how he tried, and it got him killed.

What else are you going to do in Wyoming?

Nathaniel tries to wrap up the conversation.  Jonathan drags it on by talking about how the movie drags on.

Once Upon A Time in the West vs. Unforgiven: there’s slow and then there’s slow.

The geography of the Western.  Or just Hollywood in general.

Robin Williams’s movie RV gets mentioned in a podcast about the greatest movies ever.

The dangers of watching a movie filmed where you live.

The hosts place the movie, while Michael Sr. disagrees with all of them.

Michael feels the raw nerve hit of The Hurt Locker puts it higher than Unforgiven.

Jonathan called Star Wars dropping out of his Top Ten, and it happened immediately.

Nathaniel drops the Bull, but still loves Success.
