Double Indemnity – September 6, 1944

Director: Billy Wilder

Producer: Buddy DeSylva, Joseph Sistrom

Writers: Billy Wilder, Raymond Chandler

Actors: Fred MacMurray, Barbara Stanwyck, Edward G. Robinson

Distributor: Paramount Pictures

The course of the conversation:

A dark tale of double crossing double crossers.

Barbara Stanwyck is so damn good.

Fred MacMurray plays against type (sort of).

Edward G. Robinson is epic.

Classic noir that set the tropes for the genre moving forward.

Dissonance between knowing the character is doomed, but hoping it’ll all be okay.

Nathaniel’s personal experience comes into play.

Is Walter Neff weak-willed?

If only regular dialogue was as snappy as this.

Incredibly noticeable gaff.

More Barbara Stanwyck.

The end was a bit expected, but is that the movie or the Code?

Jonathan wants a remake that goes really dark.

Nathaniel thinks Double Indemnity is very successful at what it’s trying to do.

Jonathan thinks it’s more successful than The Third Man.

Michael puts it highest, but nowhere near The Third Man.

Then the guys talk about The Sweet Smell of Success.
