The Community Foundation is ready to release the 2011 USVI KIDS COUNT DATA BOOK.  The book is titled  “Our Children Now!  Investing in Our Children’s Future.” Judith Richardson, and Kim Holdsworth, the KIDS COUNT Co-director along with Ellie Hirsh, of The Family Connection will discuss the meaning for this year’s Kids Count data on Wednesday from 9 to 10 AM at the Sugar Estate Head Start center on First Ave and First Street.  The KIDS COUNT Data Book provides information on child well-being in the Virgin Islands. The idea is to promote dialogue on children’s issues, the community response and what action is needed to improve the health, safety and economic status of our children, from birth to age eighteen. For additional information, please call CFVI at 774-6031.

Folks called WSTA yesterday about the traffic congestion yesterday as road runners from a cruise ship blocked up the roads around Subbase.  But across town at the Edith Williams school the brothers of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and the sisters of Delta Sigma Theta were making good news. They came from a different cruise ship to support the school. Damien Goins, from Maryland’s Prince George’s County public schools, was one speaker. He challenged students to think about the negative influences in their lives – from drugs to peer pressure — and how to weed them out. He asked students to list their goals, for 30 days, six months and one year, and encouraged them to take the necessary steps toward achieving them.

Good News St John – the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and Environmental Protection Agency has awarded the Coral Bay Community Council a twenty thousand dollar grant to perform wetland restoration. Our local agency has to match the grant.  They will be working with the farm plots around the agricultural station.

Good News Maker of the Day is Colonel Caroline Fawkes of the VI National Guard who retired from on Sunday. Senate President Ronald Russell commended Fawkes on her years of service to the National Guard and her accomplishments: First woman to become a pilot in the VI National Guard, first woman to fly a C23Sherpa aircraft and first woman to be a State Army Aviation Officer in the US National Guard. Oh and in her spare time she earned a master’s degree in business administration. She is a role model for our youth. Caroline Fawkes !  You are making Good News.
