CRAIG:      And you’re listening toSocial Media at The Pulse on 94.7, and I am one of your hosts, Craig McArthy, and our other host is?

CHEY:       Cheyanne Ainsworth.

CRAIG:      Welcome, Chey.  This is a show where we talk about everything social media, tech and online marketing. And, wow, (laughs) …

CHEY:       What a week!

CRAIG:      What a week, and yes, there has been some dramas getting into the studio today.  And there is traffic dramas out there.

CHEY:       It is all happening.

CRAIG:      It is all happening, yes.  I’m feeling lucky to be here.

CHEY:       Yes.  And the studio is nice and cool.

CRAIG:      Yes, it is nice in here. 33 out there – beautiful day in Geelong.

CHEY:       Gorgeous.  I know. I actually just saw on a Facebook update that one of my friends is in the States and the have got a blizzard happening.

CRAIG:      Wow.

CHEY:       Yes, so one end of the weather spectrum to the other.

CRAIG:      Yes, that is exciting.

CHEY:       How has your week been?

CRAIG:      It has been fantastic.  Yes.  Had the bucks weekend as it turned out, you know last weekend.

CHEY:       Which you can’t talk about!

CRAIG:      Which I can’t really talk about.  Thanks to Simon Pilkington for organizing that.  He is a regular listener to the show, so it was fun and I met another guy (Luke) as well.  And he works for Gnarley Productions.

CHEY:       They do a …

CRAIG:      Video production.  Yes.

CHEY:       Fantastic job.  I think I actually mentioned them in a show a while ago.

CRAIG:      Yep.  I think you did too.

CHEY:       Yes.  No, they do some fantastic stuff.

CRAIG:      Yes.  So that was really good.  Luke McNee.

CHEY:       Yes.

CRAIG:      So we had a great weekend.  A bunch of guys.  Had some fun.  The mankini was out, so …

CHEY:       Ah, yes I saw that photo (laughs).  Fluoride green.

CRAIG:      Yes.  It wasn’t pretty.

CHEY:       No.

CRAIG:      Really not necessary too.

CHEY:       Probably not!  Bucks nights, you just never know though.

CRAIG:      That is right.  Yes.

CHEY:       Yes.  I’ve seen some .. definitely some interesting stuff on bucks nights on social media.

CRAIG:      Yes, of course.

CHEY:       Yes, what stays on the trip doesn’t stay on the trip anymore.  It stays on social media (laughs).

CRAIG:      That is right.  We had a group page for ours, so ours is a little bit private, but yes.  You never know.  I went down to …  I spent some time down with Kylie down at Brown Bureau this week.  We were doing some [inaudible : 22:50] leafwork with leaf from  [inaudible : 22:48], so yes.  They are doing a good job marketing down there.

CHEY:       Awesome.

CRAIG:      Mmm.  How has your week been?

CHEY:       Ah, look.  I was actually saying to somebody this morning is it really Friday?  Because it feels like yesterday was Tuesday.  I have spent a couple of days in Melbourne with some customers doing some pretty interesting stuff.

CRAIG:      Really?

CHEY:       Yes.  Just a cross-platform idea that we also came up with and played around with, and whiteboarded, and went yep let’s do it.  So I’ve, yes …

CRAIG:      Great.  Tell me all!

CHEY:       No, can’t actually.  No.

CRAIG:      When are you going to launch this cross-platform idea?

CHEY:       No. It is actually the campaign that’s cross-platform that is … it blends itself from going from one platform to another like a treasure hunt-type thing.

CRAIG:      So, social media platforms are you talking about?

CHEY:       Yes.  So that’s .. yes, that is certainly the highlight of my week.  What else.  Gosh, yes, the week is over.  I am ready for fish and chips and a beer (laughs)

CRAIG:      Yes, me too.  Let’s, while we are here, give a big plug to the GO Festival.

CHEY:       Yes.  That is next weekend.

CRAIG:      Yes.  Thanks for Susan, who came on the show last week.  Had a chat about the GO Festival.  It was fantastic.

CHEY:       Are you going to head along?

CRAIG:      I think …

CHEY:       It’s 2 days.

CRAIG:      It is 2 days, yes.  I’m not sure yet.  I think I will … go and have a look, have a massage, do some …

CHEY:       Kung Fu fighting.

CRAIG:      A bit of Kung Fu fighting, a bit of physical dancing, fitness-type stuff.

CHEY:       I actually thought about it afterwards.  They should have a spa session or something, so they set up some spas (laughs)

CRAIG:      (laughs) yes.  That is pretty weird.

CHEY:       No.  It is always having a spa.

CRAIG:      Oh yes.  I just can’t picture it at the Exhibition Buildings in Carlton.  A big spa and, you know, lots of girls and the odd guy!  Anyway, moving right along.  GO Festival tickets available to every subscriber, so anyone who is a subscriber here at The Pulse, and we encourage you to subscribe at The Pulse.  It only costs $50, and it supports local radio and local artists.  So, yes, free GO Festival tickets available to every subscriber.  Just come in during business hours to collect yours.

CHEY:       Ok.  Well, we have got a pretty packed show today.  I’ve got the News Desk happening next.  Then we are going to be speaking diamonds with the [inaudible : 20:28] from Madison Jewelry.  He is our interview today, and he .. look, I just have to applaud him for .. I think have already (you know) have a few times.  He does a fantastic job with social media.

CRAIG:      Yes.

CHEY:       On Facebook specifically.  Yes.

CRAIG:      And customer service and, you know, building relationships with customers and all that sort of stuff.  I am really looking forward to that interview.  That is going to be great.  He does some … it is a little family business, and they do some really family … some friendly stuff to build trust with their customers and that sort of stuff.

CHEY:       Yes.  Different types of points so that you remember the brand.  Not just from Facebook.

CRAIG:      Yes.  And if we’ve got time, I might come back with some odd bods at the end.  Some Random Resources.

CHEY:       We still haven’t got a name for it.  It is getting to the point where it is ridiculous that we don’t have a name for it.

CRAIG:      Ridiculous Resources.  That’s not bad (laughs)

CHEY:       Yes.  That could work (laughs)  You are on 94.7 The Pulse.

[THEME TUNE MUSIC and pause]

CRAIG:      That was a bit of fun.

CHEY:       Yes

CRAIG:      viz-a-viz that intro.

CHEY:       A bit Salsa-ish!

CRAIG:      Yes, it makes me feel like dancing.  Maybe Friday night will be Salsa dancing night down at Bedrock.  You never know.

CHEY:       I’ve have been in that place, yes.  I know(both laugh)

CRAIG:      Yes.  So, looks like it is News Desk time.

CHEY:       It is.  So this week Instagram.  You have an Instagram Account?

CRAIG:      Correct.

CHEY:       The feed is now on the Web. So it is exactly like it is on your iPhone, or your Android, where you up and go, take your photos, can like, engage and see everything else.  But now available on Web.  So that is a different move.  Most applications start with Web and then go to App.  But they have done it the other way round, obviously.  Facebook tracking.  So, this is going to be great for local businesses and it’s basically they are testing it.  So it is … they are developing a smartphone application that will track the location of users.  So even when the program isn’t opened, it is in your handset, so it is like a GPS-ish type sort of thing.

CRAIG:      Right.

CHEY:       But it will be more so used for advertisers so that they can locate different advertising avenues for different businesses.

CRAIG:      Right.

CHEY:       So that is …

CRAIG:      So that is Facebook tracking.  So when you make a post on Facebook it will track your location?  Is that right?

CHEY:       Unsure.  I don’t have a great deal of information other than it is going to be released about mid-March, but again until I hear it from Facebook it’s not set in stone obviously.

CRAIG:      Yes.  I mean you could do that now with Messenger, right?  You can send messages …

CHEY:       But advertisers.  So this is the data mining that we have been talking about for so long and how they are going to be able to use it.  And what revenue they can generate from it obviously as well, so.  Now Twitter has confirmed that they have purchased Blue Fin Labs.  And they are a TV Analytics Service.  And I think it’s a good move.  Twitter, as we have said a few times, they definitely looking at an IPO this year, and they are putting themselves in a really strong position to be able to get nice pricing.  So, yes.  And what else do I have here?  Well, actually, just on that Blue Fin Lab take-over.  It is the biggest acquisition Twitter has made thus far.  So that is really saying something.

CRAIG:      Wow.  How about that?

CHEY:       Now, Apple have got a 128-gig iPad that is going on sale.

CRAIG:      Wow.

CHEY:       And it is being released just ahead of Microsoft’s Surface Pro launch, so yes (you know).  These things happen.  Australia’s High Court overturned a misleading Search Ad ruling, says Google.  So that was an appeal.  The High Court decision was upheld, the Appeal was put in and Google won it.  And there is … it’s pretty complicated.  I sort of was reading through it, and I don’t know how to simplify it completely.  But, basically, the High Court said that it found last year that Google wasn’t responsible for misleading advertising.  That a number of companies took out on bids to hijack traffic from Google searches of competitors brands and products.  So it is a bit complex.  Hard to explain, but just so that you know, they …

CRAIG:      Maybe we should get our friends at Pod Legal to give us a quick summary .. a 3-sentence summary on what it means to people.

CHEY:       Yes.

CRAIG:      Sounds interesting.

CHEY:       I’m tipping Jamie and Karen could do that.  It certainly is interesting, and it sort of set a standard as well, I think too!  Now, Vine.  We’ve mentioned it for the last 3 weeks, and I mentioned last week that it didn’t do too well with the … a certain industry getting involved in it, that … not great for kids.  So what Vine has done is it has got an age rating, so if you go into Vine now, you need to upgrade it.  And it will come up with saying that you need to be 17+.  So that is a really good move, I think.  Enabling that.  It just makes it a little bit safer.  So, next on the list is Tumblr.  It has added real-time notifications to its dashboard.  So, it actually feels and looks like the Facebook Ticker.  Now when the Facebook Ticker came out people either loved it or hated it.  I still really don’t care.  Sometimes I like it, just to see what is going on, and other times I think (gosh) someone’s just talking far too much.

CRAIG:      What is a Facebook Ticker?

CHEY:       The Ticker is on the right-hand side so you can actually see where …

CRAIG:      Yep, what people are doing. ..

CHEY:       What people are doing …

CRAIG:      Liking …

CHEY:       Liking

CRAIG:      Yep, ok.  Got it.

CHEY:       And commenting on and that sort of stuff.  So people, when that first came out were pretty much against it.  So, there you go.  Tumblr …You know, sometimes I do, sometimes I don’t.  You know.  Now Google has launched enhanced campaigns to manage cross-device campaigns in AdWords.  Did you see that?

CRAIG:      No.

CHEY:       Ok.  Google has also upgraded its AdWords for better mobile targeting.  Did you see that one?

CRAIG:      No.

CHEY:       Ok.  You are going to love this.  You really are going to love it.  So, I think it was Wednesday, or was it yesterday (all my days are falling into each other at the moment), but they upgraded it to AdWords program, and it lets advertisers customize their placements on mobile by (you know) device, time of day and geographic proximity.  So, that is .. like we have been saying.  The data mining and the statistics available now.  People really are getting right into it.  So …

CRAIG:      Yes.  Targeted advertising.

CHEY:       Yes.  Absolutely.  So, now Google have said they have … the upgrades will be rolling out within the next couple of weeks, so they are basically saying universally available before, you know, mid-year.  Now that is the News Desk.

CRAIG:      That was chocked full.

CHEY:       There was a few other things, but I think News Desk takes up a bit too much time.

CRAIG:      It does.

CHEY:       Yes.  There is just so much to talk about.  We could do it 3 times a week.

CRAIG:      We might have to start pre-recording and then we will just play it at high-speed, up speed, just to get you out of the way, so then I can talk about some stuff.  Sounds like good fun to me.  You are listening Chey and Craig.

[THEME TUNE MUSIC and pause]

CRAIG:      And welcome back.

CHEY:       It is a lovely Friday afternoon here, isn’t it?

CRAIG:      It is.  You are listening to Chey and Craig on Social Media at The Pulse.

CHEY:       On 94.7 The Pulse.  And we have a lovely guest today.  I met Advak online, on Facebook and he runs a company called Madison Jewelry.  They are in Glenn Waverley and another suburb.  When we get him on, I will get him to jog my memory on where the other one is.  He’s been in jewelry for over 20 years and I will absolutely applaud him for the way he uses Facebook.  The engagements that he gets is just astounding.

CRAIG:      Yes.

CHEY:       And it is a real personable look.  So that is why I wanted to speak to him on the show.  Just to give other listeners some hints and tips about engagement and what works.

CRAIG:      Fantastic.  Well, let’s bring him on.

CHEY:       Advak, are you there?

ADVAK:    Yes, I am.

CHEY:       Welcome to the show.

ADVAK:    Thank you Cheyanne. I think it is great to be with you guys.  I appreciate the opportunity to have a chat and to share some things that I know.

CRAIG:      Fantastic.  And you’ve known Chey for a little while, but we have never met.  So, do you want to tell us a little bit about your background, and also the business (Madison Jewelry)?

ADVAK:    Certainly.  I’ve been … I started back in … well, I left High School in ’88.  I did 2 years with my brother as a diamond setter initially.  That is a specialized field within the jewelry trade, so you have a jeweler who makes the jewelry item and then a diamond setter will set the gems into the piece of jewelry.  So I didn’t actually enjoy those.  Sort of too monotonous and too boring.  Then I got the taste of jewelry making.  And I did my apprenticeship with a jeweler in [inaudible : 10:58] for 5 years, which was a great experience.  It was one-on-one and so I learnt everything hands-on.  And then I went straight into my own business in ’97.  In Glennwaverley, I have my own store (which was obviously a challenge in itself), but that was a great experience as well, and so I’ve been in business now nearly 16, yes 16 years.

CHEY:       I gave you an extra 4.  Sorry about that (laughs)

ADVAK:    That’s ok (all laugh).

CHEY:       So …

ADVAK:    We run Madison Jewelry now from Glennwaverley.  We are still being here in the same area, and we also have our on-line store as well.

CHEY:       Fantastic.  Now on .. I think we met on Facebook, I would say probably 3 or 4 years ago.

ADVAK:    Yes.  I think it has been about 3 years.  Yes.

CHEY:       Yes.  It is incredible.  We have never met in real life yet though, so …

ADVAK:    I would love to.  If you want it to happen it will happen.

CHEY:       Yes.  Absolutely.  But what I’ve noticed most about Advak’s presence in social media is (you know) he is just so friendly.  So loveable.  And it’s that note I can trust about him and his business that I wanted to (you know) talk to you about.  And I think we were talking before about a post that you were doing a headline, and you couldn’t figure out what headline you wanted to use for an image.  So, you went ah look I will just ask my friends on Facebook.  And how many responses did you get to that?

ADVAK:    We’ve had just over 260 – 263 if I recall, and there was a picture of a stack of diamond rings, and I was just looking for a headline which I wanted to reuse as a Facebook post and also for my internal marketing that we do through our brochures etc.  For our customer base.  And I sort of had a mental block, and I was stuck, and I was just thinking of a headline, and thought I would just share with my friends on Facebook.  The response was magnificent.  We had some really cool headlines and some weird ones and funny ones that were just fabulous.  And I sort of made it into a competition, so I gave away some gift vouchers to the best headlines.  It was a great post, yes.  And it worked out really well.  So I have got some ripper headlines to use.

CHEY:       You also use your customer service as a follow-on from when people would use your services?

ADVAK:    Absolutely.  That is a big thing, I think, in terms of giving the customers the after-experience as well, in terms of whether they come in for a purchase or repair.  Whatever that may be.  To follow on from what they have experienced, and we sent a thank you letter, a box of chocolates.  That just creates an amazing wow-factor, because really no-one else does it.  Or very very few people in business that I know that sort of do that extra mile follow-on service, so …

CRAIG:      For sure.

ADVAK:    It’s just that it is an important step I think, it just strengthens the relationship.

CRAIG:      Yes.

ADVAK:    And gets the customers to come back.  But more importantly, it gets them to tell their friends and family and we get heaps of referrals from that sort of … that approach.  And it also helps on-line because someone who receives such a thing, they … if we were friends on Facebook, they will post a picture of that letter and box of chocolates, and then they will tell the world, so (laughs) it works in great ways.

CHEY:       It makes you just want to go and buy jewelry from your site, doesn’t it? (laughs)

ADVAK:    (laughs) well, that sort of does happen (all laugh).

CRAIG:      So what’s unique about Madison Jewelry?

ADVAK:    Well, we built our business on repeat business and referrals basically, and so I guess my brother and myself, we are the crux of the business.  We still .. we work in the business even though we have built the business with a team, so when I hear every day, however we still are part of it.  And then I think if the relationship we have with our customers then we’ve … and many of our customers have now become, over the years, some of our best friends.  So we have a relationship with them outside of the shop, so we can travel for social events and they can come and go to each other’s houses.  And that sort of thing, so they have been to our kids’ christenings.

CHEY:       Aww, that is gorgeous.

ADVAK:    And my wedding etc, so.  And my dad’s funeral.  And so many different aspects.  And it is a point … a personality, and selling and promoting ourselves and the trust factor.  That is also another big one.

CHEY:       Yes.  I think what I’ve noticed is that you don’t do any hard sell.  Like I see people on Facebook all the time doing the push, push, push, push, push, push, and you don’t do that at all, which is great.

ADVAK:    Not at all.

[THEME TUNE MUSIC and pause]

CHEY:       And welcome back.

CRAIG:      Thanks Chey.  Great to be back.  And wasn’t that great chatting with Advak?

CHEY:       Ah. He is genuinely just a lovely bloke.

CRAIG:      I loved that he says he wants to get to know people, talk to people, chat with them, you know, build relationships.

CHEY:       Yes.

CRAIG:      Yes.  And if that involves doing business, then that is good too.

CHEY:       Absolutely.

CRAIG:      All right. We are getting into this. We are running out of time.

CHEY:       Ok.

CRAIG:      So, We are straying into …

CHEY:       What are we calling this section?

CRAIG:      Yes.  I can’t remember what we said. Random Resources?

CHEY:       Yes.  There you go.

CRAIG:      Ok.  I was quite impressed by Google this week.  As I often am, because I am into Google, or not.  And I, because I normally I get music for these shows straight from YouTube, and I use a YouTube converter to convert it to an MP3 file and take the ad out of it so I can play it nice, cleanly and quickly on the show.  And they came up and when I did a search, it came up and said in search results this website contains Malware.

CHEY:       Great screen.

CRAIG:      Yes.  And now I search for other similar tools and a few of them, again, contain Malware, so it looks like Google have taken it upon themselves to check the validity of different websites and if they are getting complaints about websites downloading stuff without asking – all that sort of stuff – they put that in the search results.  So I thought that was quite good.  I have got a quick … I’ve got an email here from Ian Clearie from Razr Social, So Razr Social is a blog and they talk a lot about tools.  A little bit like my Monkeybill Blog, where we review tools and stuff.  He said 4 tips for increasing your email subscribers.  1: make it easier to subscribe, so just enter an email.  So if you are a business website and you are looking to build your list of people who want to …

CHEY:       Prospects …

CRAIG:      Prospects, yes.  Who want to learn more from you.  Then the least amount of things you can ask for the better.  Number 2: Have your subscription options in multiple places on your website, so left-hand panel, footer, about us page.  3: provide a free download, so this is a …

CHEY:       I had this conversation. I have had this conversation a couple of times, and it’s becoming au fey, having some free download.  And it is usually (I hate to say it) crap.  And it doesn’t make me want to give my email address to anybody.  It would have to be wowing me. I think where people are using video and then download, works a lot better than just PDF, eBook, crap, crap, crap, yes.  Why did I just say that?  I don’t know if I am or not.

CRAIG:      That is all right (both laugh).

CHEY:       So …

CRAIG:      Many times I have, you know, joined up a website and got a download eBook, something like that.  Haven’t read it, so I agree.  It needs to be something different these days, because that is something old old.

CHEY:       It is.  I think people are more willing to put their information in if they can visually connect with you.  So the videos, if it is a video series of the four things, click here…

CRAIG:      4 tips …

CHEY:       4 tips.  Whatever it be.  I think more people will be more inclined to do that.

CRAIG:      Yes.  Great.  And the fourth thing he said was guest blog on blogs with lots of traffic.  So, whenever you can write on other peoples’ blogs, comment on other peoples’ blogs.  He says use compete.com to check traffic of other blogs that you are looking to post on.  So compete.com.  You can go there.  Sign up and can have a look at traffic, which is a nice little tool.  Quickly, I also saw a great little thing for … this is a little bit like SEM Rush, so this will tell you if you’re ranking for key words, the website is whatpageofsearchamion.com.  So you go in there and you put the keyword that you want to rank for, and you can see if your website is ranking within the first 10 pages of Google on the different google.com and google.com.au.  So if you are showing up in the rankings, so that is a very quick, easy to use, free tool.  So I like that.  I have got about 1 minute to go, so (Chey laughs) another thing I really liked.  I was reading Map Cuts – his blog.

CHEY:       He is good.

CRAIG:      He is good, yes.  Map Cuts is … his title is … he works for Google obviously, and he is in charge of the algorithm fundamentally.

CHEY:       That is a big job.

CRAIG:      That is a big job, yes.  So when the algorithm changes and your website stops ranking in Google, then Map Cuts has possibly got something to do with it.  He was writing a blog post about .. he was off social media and off the internet and email for 30 days.  He says that he does jump back on.  He says ‘I still see what people are discussing on ISO blogs and on Google Webmaster Forum.  I know the most recent trends in how black hats try to spam Google.  That is my primary job after all.  I keep an eye on what flavors of spam snake oil are being marketed to newbies on various forums.  So what an interesting job.  He just has to look what spammers and what new software is being developed to try and get to the top of Google without actually doing the hard yards and producing good quality content, and being an authority in your field.

CHEY:       All righty.  Well, before we go, I would like to say that Pod Legal .. I have forgotten to promote their event that is coming up for World IP Day.  I will pop that on our SocialMediaPulse.com website.

CRAIG:      Yes.  So that is this week?

CHEY:       Yes.  That is this week.  And if anybody would like to know more about it, then they can go to PodLegal.com.au, but I will put it up on our site, and our Facebook page.  If anybody wants to Tweet us or Facebook us, please do.  We would love to hear from you.

CRAIG:      Check us out at SocialMediaPulse.com.

CHEY:       Have a good week, Craig.

CRAIG:      Yes.  I’ll have a good Valentine’s Day too!

CHEY:       You do!  Absolutely.

CRAIG:      I’m looking forward to that.

CHEY:       Cheers, mate.

CRAIG:      Bye.
