Knowing God - Part 1 - Eldon Busenitz

February 08, 2013

This sermon suggestion comes from Curt, who thinks this series should be turned into a book and published! He’s sent over a great outline and some excerpts for this series, such as -

“Combine Omniscience with Immutability – You have an all-wise God whose plan is to make you like his Son. That plan does not change even though circumstances in your life do change. In his perfect wisdom, He knows exactly what is best for you to bring that plan to completion. His message is “TRUST MEâ€!

and

“All fulfilled prophecy is a testimony to God’s omniscience combined with His sovereignty and powerâ€.

Introduction

• Knowing God must be a priority

o It affects our worship

o It affects our witness

o It affects our walk

“So necessary to the church is a lofty concept of God, that when that concept in any measure declines, the church with her worship and moral standards decline with it. The first step down for any church is taken when it surrenders its high opinion of God.†– AW Tozer

John 17:3 “This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent”

Ephesians 1:17 “that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Himâ€

Colossians 1:10 “so that you will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of Godâ€

II Peter 3:18 “but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ to Him be the glory, both now and to the day of eternity Amenâ€

• Knowing God has a purpose

o What does it mean to “know†God?

Salvation is just the beginning. To grow our closeness to Him is to love what He loves, hate what He hates and value what He values.

o How does knowing God translate into life?

Jeremiah 9: 23-24 â€Thus says the LORD, ” Let not a wise man boast of his wisdom, and let not the mighty man boast of his might, let not a rich man boast of his riches; (24) but let him who boasts boast of this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the LORD who exercises loving kindness, justice and righteousness on earth; for I delight in these things,” declares the LORDâ€.

Boasting in the Lord’s loving kindness, justice and righteousness, not in our wisdom, might or riches, delights the Lord.

• Knowing God has great potential

Daniel 11:32 “By smooth words he will turn to godlessness those who act wickedly toward the covenant, but the people who know their God will display strength and take action.â€

Exodus 33:13 “Now therefore, I pray You, if I have found favor in Your sight, let me know Your ways that I may know You, so that I may find favor in Your sight Consider too, that this nation is Your people.”

Exodus 33:18 “Then Moses said, “I pray You, show me Your glory!”

Psalm 27:4 “One thing I have asked from the LORD, that I shall seek:

That I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life,

To behold the beauty of the LORD and to meditate in His temple.â€

Psalm 42:1-2 “As the deer pants for the water brooks,

So my soul pants for You, O God.

(2) My soul thirsts for God, for the living God;

When shall I come and appear before God?â€

Psalm 63:1-2 “O God, You are my God; I shall seek You earnestly;

My soul thirsts for You, my flesh yearns for You,

In a dry and weary land where there is no water.

(2) Thus I have seen You in the sanctuary,

To see Your power and Your glory.â€

Philippians 3:8-14 “More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish so that I may gain Christ,

(9) and may be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own derived from the Law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which comes from God on the basis of faith,

(10) that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death;

(11) in order that I may attain to the resurrection from the dead

(12) Not that I have already obtained it or have already become perfect, but I press on so that I may lay hold of that for which also I was laid hold of by Christ Jesus.

(13) Brethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead,

(14) I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

• Knowing God is possible

John 1:14 “And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.

We know God through Christ His Son. God knows us and He is constantly looking at us and loves us despite all our imperfections.
