Hand rearing a baby bird is no mean feat… but one week in, and Tufty is doing well |
|
For possibly the first time ever, I’m actually starting off this week’s article with a non-musical theme (**gasp!**) About seven days or so ago I was out walking my doggy Molly. We were walking along minding our own business, when up ahead we spotted something that looked like little pink blob in the middle of on the road. On closer inspection it turned out to be a tiny weeny baby bird who didn’t look more than one or two days old. It lay completely motionless on the ground and didn’t appear to be alive. Rather than leaving it in the middle of the road I thought I’d put him in the hedgerow, but when I went to pick him up to my amazement he started moving and snuggling into my hand. I had a good look around the area but it was very obvious that no birds nests were near by and he was far to young to be attempting to fly. I went back home with Molly straight away as I knew I needed to get him warmed up and hydrated as quickly as possible. When I was younger I used to look after many injured birds and had a little area on my parents farm where I used to keep them and nurse them back to health. So I have done this sort of thing many, many times before – so I’m aware that attempting to hand-rear wild baby birds (especially who are this young) is no mean feat! The first day and night are always the scariest part as you can give them everything they need and sometimes for totally unknown reasons they still don’t make it. I’m happy to report, however, that one week later Tufty (as my Mum has named him due to his funky hair do) is doing well. Here he is one day after I found him: and here is is a week later: Being a full time mum is seriously exhausting, but worth it So in between looking after Tufty I’ve been doing lots of fun gigs. Last weekend was cool, four gigs in two days… and if you fancy taking a look there’s one of my random video blogs for you to check out: Anyways I’ve just arrived back from Uxbridge after gigging with Nicky last night, so I need to go and do some packing – hope you have a good weekend and see you next time (image: Katie Marie Photo taken by Lisa (Indigo Blue Photography) and edited by Sandra (Soul Photography))
