James Holmes: Crazy or calculating

Louisville, KY - As the world knows by now 24-year-old James Holmes has been identified as the shooter in the Aurora, Colorado shooting spree on Friday. While many rationalize that Holmes must be crazy, I am left to wonder, is he really crazy, or did he calculate the risk that he could get away with it by reason of insanity as some sort of "experiment" using himself as the test subject. Either way there are many questions to be asked and all relate to the psyche of James Holmes. All reports indicate that the attack by Holmes was a well thought out and executed planned one. According to a police statement on Saturday , Holmes planned the attack with calculation and deliberation. He received deliveries over a span of four months that included ammunition, gear, and guns that authorities believe were used in the attack. He booby-trapped his apartment with explosive material mean to kill anyone who entered. Holmes attack seemingly came out of nowhere with little known of him outside of school. He reportedly has no online presence to speak of, no close friends, no arrest records. Think about it. In today's age he has no apparent Facebook page, twitter, MySpace, or any other social network. NOT having any of these with today's technology is almost unheard of. So who is James Holmes? He is described as a brilliant science student in many reports. Straight A's in high school and college. At age 18 Holmes was speaking of his research at a science camp in San Diego regarding "temporal illusions." He referred to it as an illusion that allows you to change the past. Or fantasy versus reality research. Yet even after graduating with highest honors in spring 2010 with a neuroscience degree from the University of California, Riverside, Holmes could not find work. Brilliant, educated, and unemployed? Was it then that the deterioration of his psyche began? We can only speculate at this point as Holmes is refusing to cooperate with officials. Was this an intentional calculated act to prove his own scientific theories? Many things led some to believe that since this was calculated and planned that crazy does not apply. More of James Holmes is surfacing now that lead credence to this argument. After obtaining a degree and not being able to find work, Holmes then decided at some point to further his education by enrolling in a neuroscience Ph.D. program at the University of Colorado-Denver. As of last month he was in the process of withdrawing. As part of the advanced program in Denver, a James Holmes had been listed as making a presentation in May about Micro DNA Biomarkers in a class named "Biological Basis of Psychiatric and Neurological Disorders." According to Riverside's Chancellor, Timothy P. White, Holmes was "at the top of the top." Did Holmes decide to make himself the test subject of his own theories and study? Holmes was one of only six students who received National Institutes of Health grant money. He recently took an intense three-part, oral exam that marks the end of the freshman year of the four-year program there, but university officials would not say if he passed, citing privacy concerns. At the time of the shooting it has been reported that Holmes was collecting unemployment. If proven true, just where did he get the money to purchase thousands of dollars worth of guns, ammunition, explosive material, and gear? Is Holmes really insane? While there is little doubt that a plea of insanity defense is probably forthcoming, is James Holmes really insane seems to be subjective. There can be an argument against insanity but there is one that would promote the insane defense as well. After all how many of us could rationally believe that Holmes sanely decided to do something like this? Not many and that opens the door to more speculation.. Was Holmes part of the Black Bloc terrorist sect that many believe is an offshoot of the Occupy movement?
