Feedback and items of Note:

I know I haven’t written in a while, I’ve been listening though. Been super busy with too many projects. I wanted to comment on the Home Automation stuff you guys were discussing. I think that you getting deeper into smart things is really exciting. Welcome! My system is actually totally hand coded. Not some overpriced ridiculous of the shelf software. I paid to be officially licensed as an insteon developer ($200 — pretty reasonable actually), which gives me access to some of the more tricky insteon APIs. So basically my system is insteon for light switches and motion sensors, and my own raspberry pi powered circuits I’ve made which control doors, windows, curtains etc. My most recent endeavor has been to make the temperature in the nursery match what it is in the main 2nd floor thermostat — not a simple task. I tried Z-Wave control vents, total fail, had to return them. I was going to add z-wave to my server, got it all working, but the vent firmware was garbage. Alternative is insteon power outlets in the attic with motorized dampers. I got the code for the wireless insteon thermostat working, so when it reports that the nursery has reached the main target temperature, the motorized damper will close — and the nursery won’t turn into a freezer. Hope to have that finished this week before the central air really needs to get going. Other tasks have been doing whole home ventilation (look into it — it’s fairly inexpensive — a couple of hundred bucks in parts and some knowhow) and the air quality in the home is tons better. But now I gotta tie all that into my Home Automation system, I want logs when the outdoor air is being let in, when the humidifier turns on. So more custom raspberry pi circuits — love  those things.

Sorry for the long e-mail — but home automation is sorta my thing, so when you get me started — ask my wife.

PS.

House talking about various events gets old quickly. I implemented that a few years ago. Had to turn it off when the baby came.

Hey guys, I was looking through  flipboard and found this article. It is about the first computer to pass the Turing test. Just incredible what computers are able to do. This is the first true show of artificial intelligence.

Not to mention on the 60th anniversary of Turing’s death . As always, love the show,
