Ask MomRN Show: Fad Diets, Genetic Screening, Diabetes, Cancer Info

September 22, 2014

Each year a new fad diet comes out...gluten-free, fat-free, sugar-free, carb-free...it seems to never end! Some people try them just to jump on the latest craze, while others hope they will solve their gastrointestinal (GI) problems. Unfortunately, fad diets often lead to misdiagnosis for many people as they try to treat unpleasant GI symptoms – they may even ignore their symptoms or be too embarrassed to bring them up with their doctor. What people may not know is that they could be living with an under-recognized condition called exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, or EPI. Dr. Roshini Raj returns to the Ask MomRN Show to teach us about EPI and the danger of fad diets. Dr. Roshini Raj is a gastroenterologist at NYU Medical Center/Tisch Hospital in New York City, a Today show contributor, a bethenny contributor, the Good Day NY Medical Correspondent, and the Medical Editor of Health Magazine.

Celebrity chef Leticia Moreinos Schwartz is working with Merck on Desafiando La Diabetes: Logra Tus Metas, a program urging Hispanics with type 2 diabetes to know their A1C—average blood sugar level over the past 2 to 3 months—and to work with their doctor to develop a plan to set and attain their personal A1C goal. Chef Leticia is sharing simple ways people with type 2 diabetes can prepare healthy, traditional Hispanic dishes without sacrificing the flavor.

Today's show also includes info on genetic screening, cancer, & more!
