Klezmer Podcast 55- Edouard Kagansky. I met so many interesting people this year at KlezKanada. One of them is Edouard Kagansky, an Accordion player originally from Moldova, now living in Canada. Kagansky has a vast repertoire of music that includes Jewish, Russian, Hungarian, Romanian, Greek, Turkish, Macedonian, and Bulgarian. And probably some others as well. He has a real passion for the music and was excited to pass along his knowledge to those of us who attended KlezKanada this year. Pay close attention to the interview because his English is a bit difficult to understand. But it is worth it to hear what he has to say.

My interview guest is Clem from the band Watcha Clan, based in Marseilles, France. The band formed in 1998 and their style is World and Bass, influenced by the music of the Mediterranean countries. They sing in eight languages, and learn material directly from the musicians in the countries they visit. We hear Tchiribim from their newest release Diaspora Remixed, available on LP or by Download. No CD is currently available. They already have plans for a follow on album.

Klezmer Podcast 50- Ljova And The Kontraband. This is episode 50 of Klezmer Podcast and is somewhat of a milestone in the Podcasting World. I'm very happy to have made it this far. My guests on this episode are Ljova and Inna Barmash of the group Ljova And The Kontraband. They are based in New York City. Ljova started the band as a byproduct of scoring student films. He tries to avoid any particular genre and has an affinity for odd time signatures, such as his 5/4 Tango. Inna is the group's Vocalist and sings in Yiddish, Russian, and other East European languages. They are also members of the band Romashka.

The plays music from Hungary, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Croatia, and Macedonia. Walter plays Accordion, but has played Clarinet and was influenced by Dave Tarras. Steven is one of my favorite Klezmer Violinists, and does a superb job with this repertoire. We hear a sample of their song Ciganka. Look at the Harmonia website and MySpace page. The interview is with David Buchbinder of Odessa/Havana. David is a talented trumpeter and composer. His latest project and self-titled album are described as an "Explosive Jewish/Cuban mash-up." David relates his love of latin jazz as well as Jewish music; how he came to create Odessa/Havana; the history of Jewish music originating from Spain; audience response in both jazz clubs and Jewish venues. Kenny grew up listening to big bands like Count Basie and Frank Sinatra. He had an idea to bring this style to the Hanukkah repertoire. You just have to hear it to believe it!
