Think Like A Producer and Stand Out From The Crowd Check out this video about building your own buzz: Actors are trained to be in touch with their feelings; to be emotionally expressive. Actors are trained to be in the moment and can be short sighted; actors are sensitive, we take things personally, especially when acting; The problem is you can’t run a business like that – you can’t run a business based on your feelings. You can’t run a business without a long term vision. - Emily Grace Theater school doesn’t cover it. Even the best acting classes don’t cover it. What is IT? Approaching acting as a business. The importance of having clearly defined career goals and a plan of action to achieve them. Understanding how to effectively market oneself in an industry that is brutally competitive. An industry where talent alone is not enough. Most universities and most professional acting programs don’t teach actors: How to THINK LIKE A PRODUCER so you can ACT FOR A LIVING For more information about EMILY GRACE PRODUCTIONS and to find out how you can work with Emily, visit EmilyGrace.tv Here is some information about Emily Grace that I’ve pulled from Emily’s web page:
So what is the most important ingredient? It’s marketing. It’s business savvy. It’s having a plan that gets results, and putting that plan into persistent action long enough for it to get results. I’ve got a unique perspective – I am an actor, a writer, and a producer, and nothing has prepared me more for a life in the arts than my time working as a producer and for a producer (at the $5-$50 million dollar budget). I love actors. I love their courage, their passion, their determination and their heart. But there are very few people teaching actors what they truly need to know to act for a living – and that is how to be a good business person. I teach actors how to think like a producer, so they can act for a living. Yes, you want to be creative, free, and fulfilled. But what good is your acting talent if no one knows about you? It’s time to get out of acting class and into the business where offers are made, deals go down, and you get paid to do what you love. If you’ve got the talent, the training, the drive and the determination, but no one took the time to teach you the business and marketing, that’s where I come in. I’d love to help you get where you want to go with one of my powerful programs, or private coaching. I’ll (lovingly) whip you into shape and help you take control of your career. Whether you have representation or not, it’s your career. I’ll help you make a plan to make it happen. The VIDEO below and the one above (with Emily Grace as a panelist) originated as live streaming events that were available only to members of SAG-AFTRA through the SAG Foundation LifeRaft program.
These videos have now been made publicly available on the SAG Foundation YouTube channel. I’ve included these two videos that are apropos to our topic for this episode of Actors Talk. If you are a SAG-AFTRA member be sure to get on the SAG Foundation mailing list so you can be aware of these events when they are presented live. Don’t forget to take advantage of the great offer from Audible.com for a free month of their service that includes 1 free book download. I suggest One Less Bitter Actor by Markus Flanagan.
